GEOSUS 2023 TOUR

Route 1: Zhoukoudian Site

Zhoukoudian Site, also known as "Zhoukoudian Peking Man Site", is located in Longgu Mountain, 26 miles (42 km) southwest of the central Beijing. It dates back to about 300,000 to 700,000 years ago and is one of the Pleistocene ancient human sites in the world with rich connotations, complete materials, and scientific research value.

The Zhoukoudian Site has a protected area of 1368 hectares, with a total of 27 locations where various fossils and cultural relics of different periods have been discovered. More than 200 human fossils, over 100,000 stone tools, a large number of fire relics, and over a hundred animal fossils have been unearthed. It is a treasure trove of human fossils and a comprehensive research base for multiple disciplines such as paleoanthropology, archaeology, paleontology, stratigraphy, chronology, environmental science, and karst science.

On March 4, 1961, the Zhoukoudian site was selected by The State Council of the People's Republic of China as one of the first national key cultural relics protection units. In 1987, the Zhoukoudian Site became a World Cultural Heritage site.

路线一：周口店遗址    

周口店遗址（Zhoukoudian Site），又称“周口店北京人遗址”，位于北京市房山区周口店镇龙骨山，诞生于约三至七十万年前，是世界范围内更新世古人类遗址中内涵较丰富、材料较齐全、较有科研价值的遗址之一。

周口店遗址保护范围1368公顷，共发现不同时期的各类化石和文化遗物地点27处，出土人类化石200余件，石器10多万件以及大量的用火遗迹及上百种动物化石等，是人类化石宝库和古人类学、考古学、古生物学、地层学、年代学、环境学及岩溶学等多学科综合研究基地。

1961年3月4日，周口店遗址被中华人民共和国国务院公布为第一批全国重点文物保护单位。1987年，周口店遗址被公布为世界文化遗产。

Route 2: Badaling Great Wall

Badaling is the site of the most visited section of the Great Wall of China, approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Beijing's city center, in Badaling Town, Yanqing District, Beijing municipality. The Great Wall is Chinese ancient defensive project. It is a wall to ward city and country. Badaling Great Wall is built to protect Beijing City on the north side. The portion of the wall running through the site was built in 1504 during the Ming Dynasty, along with a military outpost reflecting the location's strategic importance.

Badaling has a stone engraved with "不到长城非好汉" ('not arrive Great Wall not good man'), a famous line from one of Mao Zedong's poems. About 500 state leaders and VIPs, including U.S. former presidents Nixon and Reagan, Prime Minister Thatcher, and Queen Elizabeth II, have climbed Badaling and admired the magnificence and beauty of its scenery.

路线二：八达岭长城

八达岭长城，位于北京市延庆区军都山关沟古道北口，是中国古代伟大的防御工程万里长城的重要组成部分，是明长城的一个隘口。八达岭长城为居庸关的重要前哨，古称“居庸之险不在关而在八达岭”。

明长城的八达岭段被称作“玉关天堑”，为明代居庸关八景之一。八达岭长城是明长城向游人开放最早的地段。
